Family Weekend

Each year TSA Florida holds their Family Weekend Event at Rotary's Camp Florida. Our kids with Tourette and their siblings engage in camp activities like canoing, archery, arts and crafts, and a bonfire. All day Saturday parents and other adult family members take part in educational sessions hosted by members of TSA Florida and guest speakers in the medical and education fields knowledgeable about Tourette.

Rotary’s Camp Florida is an 18-acre camping facility, which borders two beautiful lakes. There are four bunkhouses that sleep 10 people each and four that sleep 20 each. All bunkhouses have shower and bathroom facilities and are heated and air-conditioned. Bring your own linens, soap and towels. There is an infirmary on site and we will have a nurse there the entire weekend. The dining hall seats 130 people and is heated and air-conditioned as well. There is a fully operational kitchen big enough to handle our group. Meals are provided by our organization but you might want to bring snacks or special dietary meals as needed.

There is an assembly hall, which can also seat 130, and like every other building it is heated and air-conditioned. There is a stage and two side storage rooms. This is where our guest speakers will be presenting. There is a 600 square foot library on premises with windows overlooking the playground, dock and arts and crafts room. There are shelves lined with books, games and puzzles should someone need a quiet moment. The library will be available in the evening to relax and talk with other parents. During the day it will be used for activities with the children’s program. There is a screened in Pavilion overlooking the lake. It is over 1600 square feet and can be used for a multitude of events. There is a laundry room but since we are only there for the weekend, there might not be much use for it.

The bunkhouses are NOT co-ed. They are divided into men with boys and women with girls. Please do not plan on sleeping together as a family at the camp facilities. We do our best to accommodate single mothers staying with their young boys, etc. but cannot guarantee those arrangements until very near the event. There are hotels in the area for those who do not wish to sleep at the camp.

Family Weekend 2007

The fifth annual Family Weekend on February 9-11, 2007 was enjoyed by over 120 that attended the event at the Rotary Camp in Brandon, Florida. After the traditional “fish fry” dinner on Friday evening, families were entertained with the music of Scott “Twitch” Anderson.

On Saturday while the children joined their counselors and participated in various activities with a pirate theme, the adults heard Susan Connors, Education Specialist for the TSA National office in New York, discussed Education Issues and Tourette Syndrome. Sue offered suggestions for accommodations beneficial in the school setting and answered questions on how to get help at school.

After lunch, Elaine Shimberg, author the book, Living With Tourette Syndrome, spoke to families and gave them a parents perspective on raising children with Tourette Syndrome.

Following Elaine Shimberg’s presentation, Donna Sakuta, Executive Director for the Florida Chapter, spoke on the topic “Executive Dysfunction; How to Help your Child Get Organized.” Donna discussed how Executive Dysfunction affects student performance at school and offered suggestions and strategies to help build organizational skills.

Following a spaghetti dinner Saturday night, those in attendance enjoyed makings s’mores around the campfire.
