Family Weekend 2008

The sixth annual Family Weekend 2008 was held at the Rotary Camp in Brandon Florida on Feb 8-10, 2008. This event was free to members of TSA.

Topics related to TS and medication, behavior, education, social skills and young adult issues will be discussed. Guest speakers will be announced.

This year our program for parents included Kathy Giordano, Advocacy Specialist from National TSA. Kathy will be discussing educational issues and how to advocate for your child.

Our medical speaker was be Dr. Michael Fox, child and adult psychiatrist, on the Florida Chapter’s physician referral list. He answered your medical questions about TS and discussed medications that currently being used for Tourette Syndrome and associated disorders.

We have some successful young people who will be sharing with us their inspiring stories. Asher Edelson, author of Adventure Land: The Strike of Lightning, spoke to attendees at the Family Weekend about how he was able to write his recent novel in spite of his severe tics.

Youth counselors lead the participants in a variety of activities and games. We have some special activities planned this year. Matt Giordano lead a drumming circle on Saturday afternoon. This was a big hit enjoyed by those who attended.

The weekend offers families an opportunity to meet others, share experiences, ask questions and learn more about TS. The children are able to socialize freely with other children who also have TS and make new friends. We receive many positive comments from adults and children that attend each year.

This event defines the Florida chapter. Start planning to attend the 2009 Family Weekend!
