Brevard County TSA Support Group Celebrates One Year Anniversary

This August, Brevard County's Suport Group turned one year old. Brevard is known as the Space Coast and the group supports those with Tourettte's within the 72 mile long county, ranging from Titusville to the north, Cocoa and Viera in the center and Melbourne and Palm Bay to the south.

Family Weekend 2007

The fifth annual Family Weekend on February 9-11, 2007 was enjoyed by over 120 that attended the event at the Rotary Camp in Brandon, Florida. After the traditional “fish fry” dinner on Friday evening, families were entertained with the music of Scott “Twitch” Anderson.

"I Have Tourette's, But Tourette's Doesn't Have Me" Wins An Emmy

The TSA-HBO documentary, "I Have Tourette's but Tourette's Doesn't Have Me" has received the prestigious Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program.  It had also been nominated for a second Emmy in the category of Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming - Single Camera Productions.

Major Victory for Children with Tourette Syndrome

Today I was invited to a private Department of Education Meeting in Washington DC, in which they announced the new regulations for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). I am so happy to let you know that Tourette Syndrome will now be listed as a disability under the category of Other Health Impaired (OHI). This new classification is the result of over two decades of vigorous advocating by TSA and our members.

Family Weekend 2006 Well Attended

The Family Weekend 2006 was held Feb 3-5 at the Rotary Camp in Brandon, Florida. In spite of the rainy weather the weekend was attended by over 140 parents, children, and grandparents.

The program for the children was supervised by 10 medical students from USF that acted as counselors for the more than 60 children enrolled in the program. Laura Foster, the director for the children’s program, put together a variety of activities to keep the children engaged and active. USF medical resident, Heidi Brutly and Dr. Perry-Smith held special rap sessions for each group to discuss TS and how it affects them. While the children were occupied with various activities prepared for them the parents had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers on a variety of subjects related to Tourette Syndrome.

On Tuesday, November 8, Amanda, Colin and Jasper, three of the young stars of the HBO TSA documentary, “I Have Tourette’s but Tourette's Doesn't Have Me” will appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about life with Tourette Syndrome and to promote the premiere on November 12 on HBO. Please check your local listings for the date and time Oprah airs in your city.
